Candida gisten zijn overal om ons heen en ook in en op ons lichaam. Daar hoeven we in principe geen last van te hebben. In een voor hen gunstige omgeving veranderen de gisten echter in schimmels. Als dat in of op ons lichaam gebeurt kunnen we klachten krijgen. Wanneer onze afweer voldoende is en we ook in andere opzichten zorgen dat ons lichaam geen geschikte voedingsbodem is voor schimmels, dan kunnen we de gisten prima onder de duim houden.

Weerstand,
Het meest bekend als veroorzakers van candida infecties zijn diabetes mellitus (suikerziekte) en het gebruik van antibiotica of corticosteroïden. Bij diabetes mellitus is de weerstand verminderd en is, zonder behandeling, het bloedsuiker gehalte te hoog. Dat is een gunstige omstandigheid voor schimmels. Antibiotica doden niet alleen de bacterie waar tegen men ze inneemt, maar ook de bacteriën die onze weerstand stimuleren en zorgen voor een milieu in ons lichaam waarin schimmels niet kunnen overleven.

Corticosteroïden,
Corticosteroïden onderdrukken rechtstreeks het afweersysteem. Ook ziekten die het immuunsysteem ondermijnen, zoals kanker en AIDS, geven schimmels een kans. Verder zal ook een ongezonde leefwijze met een voedingspatroon met veel suikers en weinig essentiële voedingsstoffen het afweersysteem verzwakken. een candida infectie kan ontstaan op de huid en aan de nagels. Vooral waar de huid langdurig vochtig is gebeurt dat nogal eens. Verder zijn alle slijmvliezen gevoelig voor een candida infectie. Aan de slijmvliezen van de mond (spruw) is zo’n infectie goed te zien als een wit beslag dat makkelijk weg te vegen is. Er onder is het slijmvlies rood. Maar ook in de slokdarm en de rest van het spijsverteringssysteem kan een candida infectie ontstaan. Ook hebben vrouwen nogal eens een vaginale candida infectie waarbij ze een witgele brokkelige afscheiding merken. Deze kan flinke jeuk veroorzaken. De klachten van schimmelinfecties verergeren vaak in het najaar.

Gevolgen,
Op de plek van de infectie kunnen klachten ontstaan zoals een pijnlijke mond, slikklachten of vaginale jeuk. Maar vooral een infectie in de darmen kan meer dan alleen lokale gevolgen hebben. Buikpijn, darmkrampen, constipatie, diarree en/of anale jeuk kunnen voorkomen. Maar ook op afstand kunnen er klachten optreden zoals hoofdpijn, spierpijn, transpiratie, vermoeidheid, impotentie of keelpijn. Dit komt deels door de verdere verzwakking van het immuunsysteem door de candida infectie, maar voor een belangrijk deel ook door stoffen die door de schimmel worden uitgescheiden en dan door de darmwand heen in het bloed worden opgenomen. Deze stoffen worden endotoxinen genoemd. Belangrijke voorbeelden hiervan zijn alcohol en asceetaldehyde. Laatstgenoemde stof kan het gevoel van een kater geven. Andere gevolgen kunnen zijn geheugen en concentratie stoornissen of een depressieve stemming. Bij een langdurige infectie kan er mogelijk een allergische reactie ontstaan, waarbij het immuunsysteem antistoffen maakt tegen componenten van de candida schimmel. Dit kan uiteenlopende gevolgen hebben.

Rol van voeding

De voeding kan het beste zo gekozen worden dat zij aan de ene kant een ongunstig milieu biedt voor de gisten/schimmels en aan de andere kant het afweer systeem van de mens versterkt.

Afgeraden worden:

  • suiker en suiker bevattende voedingsmiddelen; wel mogen de meeste fruitsoorten, behalve meloen en druiven;
  • geraffineerde graanproducten; dus kies volkoren producten en zilvervliesrijst;
  • gegist brood en gefermenteerde producten (kaas, bier, wijn, zuurkool) worden afgeraden als er sprake is van een allergie voor gisten/schimmels en bij klachten door alcohol;
  • gebruik liever geen kliekjes. In bewaard voedsel treedt snel schimmelgroei op.

Aangeraden worden:

  • het gebruik van olijfolie en knoflook. Zij remmen de gist/schimmel groei; 
  • veel verse groenten en groentesappen (natuurlijke schimmelremmers, antioxidanten, vitaminen, mineralen);
  • goede vetten; voldoende omega-3 (vette vis, lijnzaadolie) en omega-6 (andere noten/zadenolie). Vermijd geharde vetten (kant en klaar producten, frituren);
  • vlees van dieren die niet behandeld zijn met antibiotica of hormoonpreparaten;
  • het vermijden van voedingsmiddelen die men niet verdraagt door een allergie of intolerantie;
  • voldoende vezelrijke voeding (vezels bevorderen een goede ontlasting en absorberen schadelijke stoffen);
  • melkproducten alleen in zure vorm; biogarde (lactobacillus, bifidus), huttenkase of hele jonge kaas.

Andere maatregelen:

  • geen antibiotica gebruiken als er geen dwingende redenen zijn; 
  • zo nodig reguliere schimmeldodende medicijnen gebruiken (bv nystatine, ketoconazoll);
  • * of natuurlijke stoffen gebruiken die de omzetting van gisten in schimmels of de schimmelgroei remmen (bijvoorbeeld: caprylzuren, butyraten, biotine of kruidenpreparaten zoals oregano extract, grapefruitpitten extract, peau d’arco);
  • herstel van de gezonde darmflora met zogenaamde probiotica; 
  • stimuleren van het afweersysteem met een selectie van vitaminen en mineralen dmv voedingssupplementen;
  • voldoende bewegen; 
  • voldoende rust. 

Gezond leef- en eetpatroon,
Een gezond leef- en eetpatroon zal altijd belangrijk blijven om nieuwe problemen door schimmelinfecties te voorkomen. Er zijn meerdere symptomenlijsten in omloop waar u met behulp van een puntenscore de kans kunt bepalen dat er bij u sprake zal zijn van een candida infectie.
